Paper: ‘The Dutch’ in Popular Visual Media of the Nineteenth Century at Conference ‘Tracing Types’

The International Conference “Tracing Types. Comparative Analyses of Nineteenth-Century Sketches” places the spotlight on the comparative analysis of texts and images of specific types and by tracing how these representations vary across sketches from different places, media and editorial contexts. Sarah Dellmann will elaborate on the emergence of illustrations of ‘The Dutch’ in word in images of various popular media of the nineteenth century. By elaborating on the changing function of categories and illustrations, she will present a diachronic comparison of what has emerged as the “Dutch national type”.
