Paper: Gesture, Expression and the Social Appeal of Life Model Lantern Slide Shows, 1880-1910
Joe Kember will give a paper titled “Gesture, Expression and the Social Appeal of Life Model Lantern Slide Shows, 1880-1910” at the conference of the the North American Victorian Studies Association (NAVSA). This year’s conference is dedicated to the topic “Social Victorians” and investigates what it means to speak of the social in the Victorian era. In what ways were the Victorians social, antisocial, or both at once? What definitions of sociability circulated during the period, and through which structures? What models of sociability vied, prevailed, and emerged? Joe Kember will address some of these questions through the lens of lantern slides.
